I support economic development that creates long-term local jobs and strengthens our community. Before approving a major data centre, I want to ensure it provides a fair return for residents. That means the developer should pay for any required infrastructure upgrades, protect our water and electricity resources, minimize environmental impacts, and contribute fairly to our tax base. Growth should benefit our community—not place additional costs on local taxpayers.
Questions we should ask:
- How many permanent local jobs will this create?
- Will the developer fund all required infrastructure upgrades?
- What is the projected electricity and water demand?
- What is the plan to meet the extra demand on water and energy?
- Will residents face increased costs or reduced service capacity?
- What tax revenue will the municipality receive after any incentives expire?
- What is the emergency response plan for fires or hazardous equipment?
- Could this land support developments that provide more jobs or housing?
