Today CBC has posted a news story on Data centres. In Ontario 88% either oppose or are unsure about AI data centres. The reasons are clear; health, water and electricity needs of these data centres.
In June Prime Minister Carney announced $2 Billion in spending on his “AI for All” initiative. The question in my mind is, do we all really want AI?
To be clear data centres are not the same as “cloud facilities” that use just a few megawatts of power, the new AI data centres use hundreds of Megawatts of power.
Quote from CBC article:
“In Ontario, Oakville voted in August to impose a one-year moratorium on data centre construction, while Mississauga is set to vote in September on a similar moratorium.”
Interested in learning more about data centres? CBC does a fair job of reporting on the issue. The link to the CBC article is here.
I feel strongly that we need to get ahead on data centres and impose a moratorium.
